April Meeting

Shorwell WI celebrating 70 years 1948 – 2018

Shorwell WI meets monthly on the second Monday at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Russell Road, Shorwell.

At the March meeting 25 of our members attended and enjoyed hearing about (and sampling) Jim Miller’s fine Rosé wine choices; we were also delighted to see our decorated pottery pieces from the February meeting.

Our website www.shorwellwi.org.uk now includes the first scrapbook, ‘1915-1965 50 years of the WI’. Although Shorwell WI was still in its teens in 1965, the scrapbook is a great insight into the social history of Shorwell village, with information about local groups and events and some familiar faces. The scrapbook can be found by clicking on the ‘Blog’ tab and can be downloaded as a PDF.

As the lighter days become more evident we start to think about the Midsummer Fair and our popular Produce & Preserves stall; marmalade, jam & chutney pans to the ready!

In April we meet on Monday 9th at 7.30pm, when we will hear about Costumes in Theatre with Andrew Wilson-Jenner.

We are a very friendly group and Visitors are most welcome, there is no charge for your first three visits. If you would like more information about what we do please feel free to call Debbie on 741384.

Shorwell WI Wallhanging

In 2016 our WI was visited by Mark Earp, who explained the idea of a wall hanging to commemorate 100 years of the end of the Great War 1918 – 2018. A piece of sack material, the same as the sandbags used at the time, was provided; the brief was to represent our village using any media. After much research and head-scratching we decided to use our wall hanging to reflect those lost in the war who went from Shorwell village, together with the postcards that the men would have been sending home.

The Parish Hall was built as a memorial to those lost. It therefore features as the centrepiece surrounded by the names of the men. The postcards are our take on the type of correspondence that would have been received at the time.

We believe it will be hung, along with 99 other wallhangings, in Carisbrooke Castle Museum.

We hope you enjoy it and feel it reflects our village appropriately.

 

Wine Tasting

25 of our members attended the March meeting and enjoyed hearing about (and sampling) Jim Miller’s fine Rosé wine choices, ably assisted by Britany and Chantelle.

The wines we sampled:-

  1. La Roche Rosé, 2016 Cabrnet d’Anjou, Loire – 11%
  2. Grand Sud Merlt, 2016 Pays d’Oc, Languedoc – 12.5%
  3. La Petit Chapelle, 2016 Bordeaux – 13%
  4. Jean D’Aosque Gande Cuvée, 2016 Genache, Pays d’Oc – 12%
  5. Coteaux Varois de Provence 2016 Brignoles, Var – 12.5%
  6. Billette Cotes de Provence Pierrefeu du Var, – 13%
